Neil Wood - Owner Trainer

I live in Brisbane but have also spent much of my life in Perth as well. I am the eldest member of my all Deaf family - both my parents are Deaf and I have two Deaf siblings.

Originally I trained as a carpenter but due to my passion and interest in Auslan and interpreting issues, I became involved in the area of Auslan teaching. I began this professional trajectory when teaching part-time at central TAFE in Western Australia twenty five years ago.

However, I was soon offered a full time post teaching the National Curriculum Framework, Certificate II to Diploma levels. At the same institution, I also taught the Auslan components of the interpreters’ course. This culminated in my role of coordinator of the Auslan Department at Central TAFE WA for about three and half years.

Relocating to Queensland, I was employed by Deaf Australia, the national advocacy body for Deaf consumers. I was responsible for coordinating the Auslan Short Courses, providing training and support to the Auslan teachers as part of Education Queensland's 'Transition to Auslan Project'. This project was implemented in primary and secondary schools throughout Queensland.

I am now currently working at Southbank TAFE Queensland as Senior Lecturer. While in this state, I have continued to conduct several informal and formal workshops relating to Auslan and interpreting. Topics include Auslan linguistics, Auslan vocabulary, finger-spelling training, and story-telling.

I hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) and Diploma of Auslan Teaching.

As Business Support for Green Door Auslan, I provide bookkeeping, legal compliance marketing, event and reception support for Neil Wood.

Born in the country Hunter Valley, I have been an Auslan signer since 18 years of age. I have worked in the financial, vocational training, advocacy and legal sectors. Half of this time has been in the NFP (not-for-profit) sphere.

I enjoy being a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ and liaising with a wide variety of people to bring together a package that serves each Green Door Auslan client. I also maintain Green Door Auslan’s website.

I hold the following qualifications:

Bachelor of Hotel & International Tourism Management (UQ)

Diploma of Frontline Management (UTS)

Certificate IV in Bookkeeping (Sydney Institute of TAFE)
